Why it's cool to go to Burning Man in a motorhome

  • Living in a motorhome is much more pleasant than living in a tent or marquee. Inside there is everything you need to survive in the desert: a bed, shower, toilet, stove, refrigerator, storage space for things and food, and air conditioning. The latter is especially important: during the day the air temperature in Black Rock City rises to +40
  • The motorhome will allow you to take bicycles with you - a must-have for the Black Rock Desert. The territory covers more than 10 square kilometers, which is quite difficult to get around on foot.
  • The camper can be decorated! Even a motorhome can become a work of art. The main thing is to make sure that the decor does not spoil the outer covering
  • A motorhome will protect you and your belongings from sandstorms and other adverse weather conditions.

Burning Man 2023. How it happened

In addition to rental companies, you can rent a motorhome from a private person

It's a marketplace where owners rent out their RVs, kind of like an airbnb for motorhomes only.
We recommend choosing options with good reviews.
Here you can find older and therefore cheaper motorhome options.

In this case, you will need to register on the site yourself, select a motorhome and contact the owners. Be sure to indicate that you are going to Burning Man and carefully read the rental conditions, what is included in the price, and what comes for an additional fee.

There is a big BUT!
Private guests can cancel their reservation. The reasons can be different: plans changed, the RV broke down, you just changed your mind, etc. If you book with a private owner, have a backup option just in case.

Popular questions

BEFORE
Burning Man takes place in the desert, where in dust we trust. This means that everything in the playa area will be covered in dust, including you and your RV. In addition to dust, the weather conditions on  the beach are quite radical; during the day the air temperature can rise to  37, and  at night drop to  10 degrees. In addition, storms, wind, lightning, rain, dust storms often occur. To protect you and the RV you need to prepare your RV and follow some rules.

Rental companies DO NOT provide services to prepare motorhomes for Burning Man, you need to do this yourself. You must return the motorhome to the rental company clean and free of dust. Otherwise, you will be charged the cost of cleaning (the amount can range from $ 1000 to $ 2000)
Preparing the RV
This must be done before  entering  playa.

The general rule is to seal all the cracks where dust can get in.

Window
Seal the joints and cracks along the contour with blue masking tape on the outside and inside. (if the links don't  open, use a VPN).
You can cover the windows with aluminum foil to prevent the inside of your RV from overheating during the day. Close and  protect mosquito nets from  dust (it is very difficult to remove dust and  dirt from them).

Floors
You can cover the floors with thick brown paper and secure with blue masking tape.

Furniture
Use old sheets and blankets to cover dinette seats/sofas/beds to prevent dust from getting on the upholstery.
DURING
Keep windows and roof vents closed ALWAYS and only open the front door to enter and exit the motorhome. Otherwise, everything inside is guaranteed to be covered with a layer of dust.

It's better to take off your shoes on   the street, and   sometimes even undress, in   the case if you   are caught in a   dust storm.
At  the entrance to it is ideal to throw a fluffy rug that will absorb some of the dust.

Never  open or  use the sun awning (it breaks from  sudden gusts of wind, the fabric is almost impossible to clean from  dust)! Wrap the ends of the rolled tent with shrink film to prevent dust from getting inside.

Keep all external compartment doors closed.

DO NOT run a generator or car engine during a dust storm. This can clog the air filter and  disable the generator or damage the engine!

Use the air conditioner only when necessary, as it is also susceptible to clogging with dust.

When sealing the cracks, do not accidentally seal the grille of the refrigerator radiator, otherwise it will turn off due to overheating of the radiator.
AFTER / cleaning
DIY cleaning
The first step is to collect as much dust as possible with DRY towels, rags or microfiber.
Playa dust has an alkaline base and is different from ordinary road dirt. Add vinegar to the water (the proportions depend on the concentration), this will effectively clean the surfaces. Otherwise, ordinary water will simply smear the dust and  turn it into  dirt.

At wash
You can stop by a  self-service car wash and   wash the motorhome there, this will significantly simplify the task with  the necessary tools.
A full service for cleaning a motorhome will cost from $ 700. In  nearby cities you need to sign up for car washes in advance.

Where to replenish and drain water?
Fill your tank full of clean water before racing  Burning Man. Use water VERY sparingly.
The average tank volume for clean water is 150 l (Class C) and 180 l (Class A buses).
It's quite possible to hold out with  this reserve throughout Burning Man.
But if you really need it, then the so-called "bees" ply along these are machines that, for a separate fee, will take your wastewater and fill the tank with clean water . In 2022 the cost of such a service was in the area $ 150
Where can I get electricity?
There is no electricity in the desert, there is nothing there at all, the Berners bring all the benefits of civilization with them. Therefore, connecting motorhomes to the network will not work. However, the house on wheels is completely autonomous and has a built-in gasoline electricity generator.
There is also a separate battery for the living part of the motorhome, thanks to which you can charge gadgets and use lighting. The refrigerator runs on gas, as does the stove.
The air conditioner and  microwave oven operate on  play only from  the generator is running. However, we  recommend limiting the use of the generator and  air conditioner as they may become clogged with dust.
Can I use a generator at Burning Man?
Yes, provided that the noise from the generator does not disturb your neighbors. It is important to remember that Burning Man encourages environmental responsibility, so you should still limit your use of a generator.
Is there a connection and internet?
Black Rock Desert, where Burning Man takes place, is a remote and isolated desert area. As a result, the availability and quality of cellular service in the area may be limited.

Carriers that provide coverage in Black Rock Desert include:

Verizon has the best coverage in this region

AT&T also provides coverage in Black Rock Desert, but it is less than Verizon.
Berners note the ability to receive calls, SMS, as well as the temporary availability of 3g with these operators.

T-Mobile service may be spotty or unavailable in some areas of Black Rock Desert.

Active use of networks during Burning Man may lead to network congestion and reduced connection quality.
Will the Wi-Fi router offered by the rental company work?
Depending on the operator (see point above).
Where can I get bikes for BM?
RV rental companies do NOT offer bicycles for rent. From some you can only rent mounts for them. You can rent a bicycle at specialized rentals or buy it. Be sure to take wheel repair kits with you.
Can I bring an ATV or petrol moped/motorcycle?
No. You can only move around  bicycles and  electric vehicles.

Burning Man in an RV is an experience like no other. We've put together some tips from experienced travelers to help you survive 8 days in the desert.

  • It will be really hot in the desert, so make sure you find a suitable camping spot. Park facing north and place a shade on your windshield. You can also purchase radiant barriers that will reflect heat outward.

  • Solar energy is a great way to charge batteries. If you rent an RV, you cannot drill solar panels on the roof. But you can always take a portable solar panel with you.

  • The motorhome must be returned to the rental place clean. Sand and dust can damage your camper inside and out. Cover cracks and switches with masking tape to prevent dust from accumulating. Use AC filters to protect vents.

  • The Burning Man website recommends parking your RV at the edge of the campsite so you can act as a wind barrier for people pitching tents. They will be grateful for this. Always keep an eye on awnings and remove them when you leave your property.

  • One of the most important tips is to save water! Burning Man is a test of wandering ability. Remember that dumping waste is prohibited in the wilderness, so try to use the campground toilets as much as possible.

  • Keep your energy consumption to a minimum. Unplug appliances when you're not using them and use LED lights instead of house lighting. Again, solar energy is a great additional resource.

  • You are responsible for any leaks in your RV, be it oil, tanks or anything else. The Burning Man RV Guide recommends bringing a five-gallon bucket for cleaning up leaks and cleaning up debris.
