You have to spend a week in the desert, far from civilization, relying only on yourself and your resources. In this article, we will provide you with a detailed preparation checklist that will help you not forget anything, as well as tell you how to choose and rent a suitable motorhome, and how to prepare it for desert conditions.

Preparing for the trip: a detailed checklist

A trip to Burning Man on a motorhome is an exciting adventure that requires careful preparation. To make your trip go smoothly and leave only pleasant memories, it is important to think over all the details in advance. This checklist will help you not to forget anything.

Documents and visas

Start with the most important thing — the documents. Make sure that all participants in the trip have valid passports. If you are not a US citizen, check if you need a visa to enter the country and apply for it in advance. Make copies of all important documents (passports, driver's licenses, visas, medical insurance) in several copies, including laminated ones. Keep copies separate from the originals, as well as in electronic form (for example, in cloud storage or by e-mail).

Money

ATMs do not work in Black Rock City and they do not accept bank cards. The only exception is ice and coffee in a special camp. It is necessary to have a sufficient supply of cash with you for the duration of your stay. Count not only on personal needs (food, water, souvenirs), but also on possible expenses related to the maintenance of the motorhome (refueling the generator, draining waste, replenishing water supplies). Each of these services costs around $100-150. Also keep in mind that you may need money on the road at gas stations, shops and cafes.

Connection

There is virtually no cellular service or internet connection in the Black Rock Desert. Warn your family and friends that you will be unavailable for a certain amount of time. Arrange for communication sessions upon your return. If it's critically important for you to stay connected, consider renting a satellite phone or Starlink equipment. You can also use walkie-talkies to communicate within the group, but make sure they are allowed on the premises.

Logistics
  • Housing after Burning Man: Take care of a place where you can relax after a week in the desert. Book a hotel room or apartment in advance, as the demand for housing in nearby cities is very high on graduation days.
  • Route: Make a detailed itinerary to Black Rock City and back. Mark gas stations on the map (including those where you can refuel the generator), shops, places to stay overnight (if you plan to spend the night on the way), and waste disposal points for motorhomes. Please note that there may be traffic jams for hours on the roads leading to the desert on check-in and check-out days. Download offline maps, as the mobile internet may be unstable along the way.
  • Useful addresses: Find and save addresses of food and water stores, gas stations, and service centers along the route and in cities closest to the desert (for example, in Reno) in advance. This will help save time and nerves in case of unforeseen situations.

Motorhome: what should I take with me?

In addition to the standard equipment provided by the rental company, you will need additional things to make your stay in the desert comfortable.

  • Spare parts: Additional hoses, adapters for refueling with water, spare filters for the generator, electrical tape, duct tape, screeds.
  • Cleaning products: Wet wipes, microfiber cloths, biodegradable cleaners, spray bottle, vinegar to neutralize alkaline dust.
  • Toilet: purchase and take with you special pills or liquid for the toilet of the motorhome. They must be added to the waste tank after each emptying to prevent unpleasant odors and bacterial growth.
  • To protect against dust: Thick paper or film to protect the floor, old sheets for furniture, masking tape to seal windows and cracks.
  • For comfort: Entrance mats, slippers for movement inside the motorhome, additional blankets, pillows.
  • To organize the space: Plastic storage containers, hooks, organizers.
  • Tools: Multitool, screwdriver set, adjustable wrench, pliers, snow chains in case of rain, small folding shovel.

Preparing a motorhome for desert conditions

Before the trip, it is necessary to prepare the motorhome for the extreme desert conditions.
  • Sealing: Carefully seal all cracks and joints of windows, doors and air vents with blue masking tape. This will help to minimize the ingress of dust inside.
  • Glass protection: Windows can be sealed with foil or a special reflective material to reduce interior heating.
  • Floor and furniture protection: Cover the floor with thick paper or film, and cover the furniture with old sheets or covers.
  • Awning: Do not use the extendable awning (awning) of the motorhome, as it will be almost impossible to clean it from dust.
  • Technical condition: Before traveling, make sure that all systems of the motorhome are in good working order: generator, air conditioner, plumbing, toilet. Check the oil level, coolant level, and tire pressure. Be sure to inspect the motorhome from below for oil leaks, gray or black water. If the rangers notice a leak, you may be banned from using the water and toilet in the motorhome, which will create serious inconvenience.

Clothing and equipment

  • Clothing for hot weather: Light clothing made of natural fabrics (linen, cotton) in light colors. Shorts, T-shirts, T-shirts, dresses, skirts, light shirts with long sleeves.
  • Clothing for cold weather: Thermal underwear, fleece jackets, warm jackets, trousers, hats, gloves, warm socks.
  • Shoes: Comfortable closed shoes with thick soles for the day (for example, boots or sneakers), worn and checked in advance. Light sneakers without logos are suitable for night events. Slippers for motorhomes.
  • Hats: Wide—brimmed hats, panama hats, caps, bandanas are required to protect from the sun.
  • Dust protection: Respirator masks, safety glasses (transparent and opaque), bandanas or light scarves.
  • Raincoat: In case of rain.
  • Reflective elements: Sew reflective stripes to your clothes and backpack so that you can be clearly seen in the dark. You can also decorate motorhomes and bicycles with garlands powered by batteries or solar panels.
  • Bicycles: We recommend taking a bicycle with you. This is the main means of transportation across the vast territory of Black Rock City. You can buy a new bike (including an electric one, prices on Amazon start at $400) or a used one (bicycles used at past events are sold immediately before entering the territory). Also, some companies offer delivery of electric bicycles directly to the rental location of your motorhome. Don't forget the charger, the U-shaped lock, the basket or bag for things, the bell, as well as decorations for the bike (neon ribbons, garlands).

First aid kit

  • Painkillers and antipyretics: For example, ibuprofen, paracetamol.
  • Remedies for diarrhea and poisoning: Enterosgel, activated charcoal, antidiarrheal drugs.
  • Antihistamines: For allergies (for example, suprastin, loratadine).
  • Motion sickness remedies: If you get motion sickness on the road.
  • Plasters, bandages, antiseptic: For the treatment of wounds, cuts, abrasions.
  • Sunburn remedies: Panthenol, Bepanthene or other products with dexpanthenol.
  • Repellents: Mosquito repellents and other insect repellents.
  • Moisturizing eye drops: To relieve irritation and dry eyes.
  • Nasal gel: To moisturize the nasal mucosa and protect it from dust.
  • Electrolytes: Powders or tablets for making electrolyte drinks to help avoid dehydration.
  • Prescription medications: If you are constantly taking any medications, be sure to take them with you in sufficient quantity, preferably in their original packaging with instructions.
  • Disinfection products: Antiseptic for hands, disinfecting wipes for cleaning in the motorhome.
  • Pee funnel: It can be useful for women to urinate standing up.
  • Medical information: Laminate the card with information about your blood type, allergies, chronic diseases, as well as emergency contact information. Make copies for yourself, your fellow travelers, and for the motorhome.

Food and water

  • Non-perishable foods: Canned food, cereals, pasta, nuts, dried fruits, protein mixes, snacks, bars (not chocolate, as they may melt).
  • Camping food: Freeze-dried dishes that are enough to pour boiling water over (for example, Mountain House).
  • Drinking water: At least 6 liters per person per day. It is best to buy bottled water, as it is convenient to store and take it with you.
  • Process water: A supply of process water for showers, toilets, and washing dishes. Check the volume of the tanks for clean and waste water with the landlord.
  • Electrolytes: Special additives that will help restore the body's water-salt balance (for example, rehydrone).
  • Alcohol: If you plan to drink alcohol, give preference to low-alcohol drinks and keep in mind moderation. Strong alcohol in the heat leads to rapid dehydration. It is best to take wine or other low-alcohol beverages with you in thermoses.

Personal items

  • Hiking backpack: For walking around the city, going to events.
  • Water Bottle: A reusable bottle that you will take with you.
  • Carabiner: For attaching a water bottle, mug, and other items to a backpack or belt.
  • Metal mug: A sturdy and comfortable mug for drinks, preferably a thermocup.
  • Wet wipes: To keep your hands and face clean throughout the day.
  • Bandana/mask: To protect against dust.
  • Sunglasses: A must-have accessory to protect your eyes from the bright sun and dust.
  • Personal hygiene products: Toothbrush, paste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, towels.

Tools and useful trivia

  • Multitool: a multifunctional tool that is useful in different situations.
  • Adhesive tape: Regular and reinforced, as well as blue masking tape for sealing motorhomes.
  • Electrical tape: For minor repairs.
  • Ties (plastic clamps): For attaching awnings, wires and other things.
  • Glue: Superglue or universal glue for minor repairs.
  • Thread and needle: For repairing clothes and equipment.
  • Screwdriver set: useful for minor repairs of a motorhome or bicycle.
  • A small adjustable wrench: it will also be useful.
  • Spare batteries: For flashlights, garlands, walkie-talkies and other devices.
  • Snow chains: In case of rain, so that the motorhome does not get stuck in the mud.
  • Shovel: A small folding shovel in case you have to dig up a motorhome.
  • Bucket: useful for collecting water, garbage, or in case of a leak in the motorhome.
  • Portable Ashtray: If you smoke, be sure to use an ashtray to avoid throwing cigarette butts on the ground.

For garbage

  • Durable garbage bags: For collecting and taking out garbage.
  • Airtight containers: For storing garbage in a motorhome to avoid unpleasant odors.
  • Trash Bucket: For collecting trash outside the motorhome.
Remember: This list is just an approximate guideline. You can add it at your discretion. The main thing is not to take too much, but also not to forget anything important. Careful preparation is the key to your pleasant trip to Burning Man!
