Start your Western Canada road trip in Calgary. Banff is about 90 minutes away, with the badlands around Drumheller a similar drive in the opposite direction. You can combine mountain roads, glacial lakes, prairies and national parks in one trip, staying along the route as you go. We’ll help you find an RV, motorhome or campervan for your dates, route and group. We compare rental companies and explain the kilometre allowance, insurance, security deposit and extra fees, so you can see how the total is calculated before you book.
    At a glance
    • Banff and parts of Kananaskis are roughly 1–1.5 hours from Calgary, depending on your starting point and destination.
    • Drumheller and the Canadian Badlands are about 1.5 hours away, to the northeast.
    • The main RV travel season runs from late spring to early autumn. Winter rentals are available through selected companies and vehicle categories.
    • The Calgary area offers campervans, family-sized Class C motorhomes, larger Class A RVs and truck campers. Availability varies by date and supplier.

Why rent through GREAT RV TRIP?

The same trip can cost quite different amounts with different rental companies. One rate may include kilometres but charge separately for bedding and kitchen equipment. Another may have a lower nightly price but a higher insurance deductible, preparation fee or one-way charge. The nightly rate alone won’t tell you what you’ll pay.

Here’s how we compare the options:
    1. You share your dates, route, group size and vehicle preferences.
    2. We compare suitable RVs and rental terms across several suppliers.
    3. You receive options with a clear breakdown of the main costs and restrictions.

You can start with approximate dates. We’ll help you work out a budget and explain which choices are likely to change the price most.

Starting a Canadian Rockies trip in Calgary

Head west for Kananaskis, Canmore, Banff and Lake Louise, then follow the Icefields Parkway towards the Athabasca Glacier and Jasper. Northeast of Calgary, the landscape changes to the badlands around Drumheller. To the south, you can visit Waterton Lakes and, with the rental company’s permission, continue into Montana in the US. Calgary International Airport has connections within Canada and to international destinations. Your RV collection point, however, may be outside the city centre or in a nearby community such as Airdrie or Cochrane. Confirm the exact depot address, opening hours and transfer arrangements before booking. Allow time for the handover. Inspecting the vehicle, completing the paperwork and learning how the water, power, heating and waste systems work takes longer than collecting a rental car. Keep the first day’s drive short, particularly after a long flight.

    Which RV should you choose?

A couple may appreciate more space, while a family may find that a smaller motorhome has the better layout. Look beyond the advertised sleeping capacity. Consider the beds, luggage space, driving distances and how comfortable the driver feels handling a larger vehicle.

    Class C motorhome

A practical option for families and small groups. The bed above the cab adds sleeping space, and most models have a kitchen, fridge, toilet and shower. A longer Class C generally provides more room inside, but you’ll need to pay closer attention to parking and campground length limits.

    Class A motorhome

A bus-style RV with a spacious living area. It can suit a longer trip when you want more room indoors, though the bed layout still needs to work for your group. Larger vehicles need more space to manoeuvre, may use more fuel and won’t fit every campsite. We’ll check availability in Calgary for your dates.

    Campervan or Class B

A compact van can be easier to drive and park, making it worth considering for a solo trip or a holiday for two. There’s less storage and living space than in a large motorhome, and some campervans don’t have an onboard shower or toilet. Check the layout and equipment rather than relying on the category name.

    Truck camper

A living unit mounted on a pickup truck. It offers a different layout from a conventional motorhome and can suit trips to more remote places. Renting a truck camper does not automatically allow off-road driving: permitted roads and areas are set out in the rental agreement.

When choosing a vehicle, we also compare seat-belted seats, bed configurations, overall length, heating, tank capacity and the included kilometres.

How much does RV rental in Calgary cost?

There’s no single nightly rate that applies to every trip. Season, dates, rental length, vehicle size and age, return location and availability all affect the price. Demand is generally higher in July and August. On a short rental, fixed fees can also add more to the cost per day.

Compare the rental quote and the wider trip budget separately:
    • Base rental charge, taxes and any vehicle preparation fee.
    • Included kilometres, extra kilometre packages and excess-kilometre charges.
    • Insurance coverage, deductible or excess, and any optional reduction in your financial responsibility.
    • Kitchen and bedding kits.
    • Generator use, propane and other paid extras.
    • A one-way fee if you return the RV to a different depot.
    • Fuel, campgrounds and park admission, which you should budget for separately from the rental unless explicitly included.

Also check the refundable security deposit and card requirements. The deposit affects how much money or credit you need available, even though it is not normally a final trip expense when returned in full. A low advertised price can change once mandatory fees and the extras you need are added. We compare the rental for your actual trip, including the route’s expected kilometres.

    When to travel

    June to August

Summer gives first-time visitors more options for campgrounds and visitor services, with long daylight hours for exploring. It’s also a busy period for RV rentals, campsites and shuttles to popular lakes. Start looking early if your dates fall in summer or around the Calgary Stampede.

    May, September and early October

These months can be quieter, but mountain weather changes quickly. Overnight temperatures may fall below freezing, and some campgrounds and seasonal roads may be closed. Check the heating, campground opening dates and the supplier’s rules for using the water system in freezing conditions.

    Late autumn and winter

A winter trip needs a suitable vehicle and a route planned around winter conditions. Standard rental RVs may have their water systems drained and unavailable for use, while some depots close or offer fewer vehicle categories. On the Icefields Parkway, snow tires marked with M+S or a snowflake symbol, or tire chains, are mandatory from November 1 to March 31, and whenever the road is covered with snow or ice. Before booking, get written confirmation that the vehicle, tires and equipment meet the requirements for your route.

    Campgrounds and overnight stops

In national parks, an ordinary roadside pull-off is not a place to set up for the night. Use designated campgrounds and book ahead for busy summer dates in Banff and Jasper. Parks Canada publishes reservation launch dates and campground seasons for each year; there is no single six-month booking rule for every site.

Before paying for a campsite, check:
    • Maximum RV length.
    • Electricity, water and access to a dump station for emptying waste tanks.
    • Generator rules.
    • Fire rules and current fire bans.
    • Check-in times and arrangements for late arrivals.
    • Access to public transport or shuttles.
Camping outside established campgrounds, sometimes called random camping, is allowed only in certain areas of Alberta’s public lands. A Public Lands Camping Pass is required for most adults camping within the designated Eastern Slopes pass area, with exemptions and local restrictions. It does not give permission to camp inside a national park.

Driving licences, age, insurance and deposits

A standard car driving licence is accepted for many rental motorhomes, but your licence must authorise you to drive the particular vehicle on the planned route. Check both the supplier’s requirements and any licence restrictions; don’t assume the same rules apply to every RV. Alberta recommends an International Driving Permit (IDP) for visiting drivers with foreign licences, particularly if the licence is not in English. A rental company may require an IDP or an accepted translation. Carry it with the original national licence: an IDP does not replace that document. Minimum ages vary. Some companies require drivers to be at least 25, while others accept drivers from 21; young-driver fees or vehicle restrictions may apply. Before paying, check the age and driving-experience requirements for every driver, along with any additional-driver fee. Insurance terms also differ. Compare liability limits, the deductible or excess, exclusions for the roof, underbody, tires and glass, US travel coverage, and the procedure for reporting damage. A refundable security deposit may be charged or held on a card. Confirm the amount, accepted card type and cardholder requirements with the supplier.

    Before you leave the depot

    • Keep the first day’s drive short.
    • Record the vehicle’s exterior, interior, tires and dashboard readings before departure. Ask staff how to check the roof safely and have any existing damage recorded.
    • Ask for a demonstration of the electrical connection, fresh-water filling, grey- and black-water disposal, and heating.
    • Save the RV’s height and length on your phone.
    • Confirm any restrictions on gravel roads and travel to the US.
    • Download offline maps and use Alberta 511 and Parks Canada to check road conditions and closures.
    • Follow the campground’s rules for storing food, rubbish and scented items around bears and other wildlife.

    How booking works

Send us your dates, or the month you have in mind, along with the collection and return cities, group size and a rough route. We’ll look beyond the advertised capacity to see whether the beds, luggage space and vehicle length work for your trip, then explain the differences between available offers.

For an accurate quote, tell us:

    • Travel dates.
    • Return city.
    • Number of adults and children.
    • Main driver’s age.
    • Approximate route.
    • Whether you need an onboard shower and toilet.
    • Whether you prefer a compact RV or more interior space.

    Frequently asked questions

Not necessarily at the terminal. RV handovers usually take place at a separate depot, and an “airport” location may refer to a nearby branch. We’ll confirm the address and transfer options for the supplier you choose.
